More about Gregory Garre

A partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Latham & Watkins and global chair of Latham’s Supreme Court & Appellate Practice, Mr. Garre is widely considered one of the nation’s top appellate advocates. A multi-award-winning attorney, Mr. Garre handles an array of complex litigation matters at all levels of the federal and state court systems and has broad experience in regulatory law, patent appeals, and constitutional law. He has argued 41 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and has served as counsel of record in hundreds of additional cases before the Court.

Extensively honored for his professional accomplishments, Mr. Garre was recently named an ‘Appellate MVP’ by Law360, and has been recognized as a premier Supreme Court and appellate advocate by Chambers USA, American Lawyer, The Legal 500 U.S. Super Lawyers, and Best Lawyers in America. Mr. Garre has also received numerous awards for his public service, including the Attorney General’s Medallion for his service as solicitor general. The U.S. Navy awarded him its highest civilian honor—the Distinguished Public Service Award—for his winning argument in Winter v NRDC, which secured a major U.S. Supreme Court victory for the Navy and its ability to conduct critical naval exercises. Most recently, he represented the University of Texas in arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Fisher v University of Texas.

A former editor-in-chief of The George Washington Law Review and member of Order of the Coif, he has remained involved with GW Law through the years, serving as a longtime visiting and adjunct professor of constitutional law as well as giving the 2016 diploma ceremony keynote address.
