A Presentation of the Findings of the 2017 Global Agenda for Economic Freedom
The Heritage Foundation’s annual Index of Economic Freedom grades nearly every country in the world on its level of economic freedom. Economic freedom contributes to the prosperity of the United States and its friends and allies. Further, nations that share commitments to free markets and liberalized trade work better together in trust and confidence. Clearly, then, promotion of economic freedom must be a key component of the foreign and domestic policies of the next President of the United States.
The 2017 edition of the Global Agenda for Economic Freedom provides a series of concrete recommendations on how policy reforms can improve economic conditions in the U.S. and in countries around the world. In addition to addressing trade issues, it examines a wide range of policies that the next U.S. administration could implement to boost prosperity and liberalize markets. Included are essays that address problematic aspects of U.S. governance, examine relationships with international institutions such as the IMF, and expose harmful practices to liberal economies such as corporate cronyism and corruption. Other essays look at potential shocks to the global economy, such as economic disruption in China or the collapse of other “BRIC” countries, and propose free market policies to cushion the U.S. economy against any significant contagion.
